August Bank Holiday - Llanwrtyd Wells Bog Snorkelling Championships

Written by Anne Newman·Tuesday, 25th August 2020

In 2020 it should be on Sunday 30th August but has been cancelled. In 2021 it will be on Sunday 29th August.

Every August Bank Holiday Sunday, the World Bog Snorkelling Championships are held at Waen Rhydd peatbog at Llanwrtyd Wells.

It’s a charity fundraising event which has been running since the 1980s and is a well established part of the local calendar. Competitors must don a snorkel and flippers then attempt to swim through the peat bog for 60 yards and back again (this doesn’t sound far but the conditions are atrocious and cold!) – the winner is the person who completes in the fastest time.

In spite of the difficulties (or perhaps because of the extreme nature of the challenge) there are usually well over 100 contestants.
